Ultra thin fibre offers high pixel density 08/08/2004

fibre optics For any manufacturer or research body that needs to develop remote or semi-flexible viewing systems, Fujikura Europe's new ultra thin image fibre can deliver vision to previously inconceivable locations.

Although the fibre has an ultra thin diameter, it still retains high pixel density and is mechanically durable. The product comes in a variety of lengths to suit the customer.

"Not only does it offer a superior image quality, but it also has a variety of applications in the medical and industrial sectors," said Robert Walker, business development manager at Fujikura Europe.

The image fibre can be supplied with a silicone resin, epoxy resin or Polyamide coating. All three coatings give the fibre high mechanical durability against handling and repeated bending. Polyamide also offers high resistance to chemicals and heat (up to 300°C) and can be used in medical endoscopes where sterilisation is required using an autoclave.

The new fibre also opens up a new wave of possible imaging solutions in industrial endoscopy, bio-molecular research, spectroscopy and industrial fibre scopes and bore scopes, where the demand to increase viewing access continues to grow.

Manufacturers of industrial endoscopes, for example, can incorporate the image fibre in products for the security and automotive sectors. It can also be used in areas of high radiation, such as nuclear power station waste storage facilities. In bio-molecular research, it can be used in fluorescent and reflectance imaging. DP
